Guide to Botox Treatments

A wrinkle relax treatment is just that, and the product used to achieve this is Botox. Botox is a muscle relaxing agent, it is used to soften, relax and smooth lines of expression, softening or eliminating angry looking frown lines, forehead lines and crow’s feet. This is a safe and effective procedure for prevention and reduction of facial lines giving a relaxed and more youthful appearance.

Are Anti-wrinkle injections safe?

Anti-wrinkle injectables are made from a drug  called Botulinum Toxin which has been used for both medical and cosmetic purposes for over 20 years with no known adverse effects. The most important thing is that anti-wrinkle injectables are administered by highly qualified practitioners in a safe, medical environment. Only doctors and dentists are licenced to provide this procedure in the Republic of Ireland.

Will I still have expression in my face?

Yes of course you will. The aim of  anti-wrinkle treatment is to provide the patient with a more youthful look, where lines are reduced and sometimes eliminated. The ‘frozen’ look many of us associate with anti-wrinkle injectables is only caused when too much toxin is administered into one area. Our practitioner targets small specific muscles that are responsible for unwanted lines and wrinkles only. This means normal facial expressions such as smiling, frowning or looking surprised will be unaffected. During your consultation your practitioner will talk you through how the treatment can be used for subtle effects so that you can look fresher without anyone seeing the treatment.

How does it work?

Anti-wrinkle treatment acts by temporarily blocking the neuro-muscular connection in the treated area, this has the effect of reducing the muscular movement in that area. When a muscles movement is limited the movement of the skin on the surface of that muscle is also reduced, resulting in smoothening of the skin surface, and hence an anti-wrinkle effect.

What areas can be treated with Anti-wrinkle injectables?

Anti-wrinkles injectables are mainly used for the face in three different sites – these are: The Crows feet or laughter lines, the frown lines or number 11`s, and the horizontal lines in the forehead. Any of these areas can be treated independently, Dr. Sarah Kate will advise you which areas you are most likely to benefit from with anti-wrinkle treatment.

Is it painful?

The needles which are used for the anti-wrinkle injections are smaller than those used by both children and adults suffering with type 1 diabetes who have to inject themselves multiples times per day. They are very fine  and the injection can only be described as a small sting. The actual treatment time is very fast and from start to finish can be carried out over a matter of minutes.

What happens after treatment?

You can carry on with your day as normal immediately after leaving the clinic, although it’s important to avoid anything strenuous for 24-48 hours. We will supply you with post op instructions. Side effects are rare, occasionally some clients experience bruising, but this usually fades quickly.  A rare side effect of anti-wrinkle can be drooping of the eyelid, this is minimised with accurate positioning and depositing of the anti-wrinkle agent.

How long do the effects last?

The treatment will on average take 2/3 days to start working, with the full effects taking up to 14 days.  Treatment is not permanent and should be treated on average every four months.
