Near-Infrared Light and Skin: Why Intensity Matters .
Infrared-A (760-1,400 nm) makes up ~40% of solar radiation reaching ground level and penetrates the dermis, where excessive intensity drives oxidative stress, MMP-1 upregulation, heat-induced inflammation (>40°C), and antioxidant depletion—accelerating photoageing, barrier compromise, and pigmentation issues. Controlled, low-intensity NIR (mimicking sunlight) follows photobiomodulation principles with biphasic dose responses, offering recovery benefits without the "friend or foe" risks of uncontrolled heat exposure, making intensity the key differentiator for skin health strategies.
