Retinoids: Gold Standard in Skincare Science

Retinoids: Gold Standard in Skincare Science

Retinoids are the gold standard in evidence-based skincare because they do something very few ingredients can do: they change how skin cells behave.

What are retinoids? They are a family of vitamin A–derived molecules used in dermatology and clinical skincare to support clearer pores, smoother texture, more even pigmentation, and stronger collagen over time.Retinoids are cell-communicating actives. They work by interacting with receptors inside skin cells and influencing gene expression, which is why their results can be structural and long-term.

In the early 1900s, scientists discovered that vitamin A deficiency caused severe changes in the skin, including thickening, dryness, and abnormal keratinisation. This was the first clue that vitamin A played a central role in skin regulation.

In the 1960s, a major breakthrough occurred when Dr Albert Kligman, a dermatologist and researcher at the University of Pennsylvania, began studying the effects of vitamin A derivatives on acne. He discovered that retinoic acid could normalise follicular cell turnover and dramatically reduce comedones. This led to the development of tretinoin (Retin-A), which was approved for acne treatment in the early 1970s.

What followed changed dermatology forever.

In the 1980s, Kligman and his colleagues demonstrated that tretinoin could reverse signs of photoageing at a structural level. Skin biopsies showed increased collagen production, improved epidermal thickness, and reduced abnormal elastin — the first time a topical skincare ingredient was proven to repair UV-damaged skin, not just mask it.

By the 1990s, retinoids had become a cornerstone of both acne and ageing treatment worldwide. Research expanded into gentler derivatives such as retinol and retinaldehyde, allowing broader use with improved tolerability.

Today, retinoids remain one of the most studied and trusted families of molecules in dermatology. Their mechanisms are mapped, their outcomes measurable, and their long-term benefits unmatched

So why are retinoids the gold standard? Because they influence multiple core pathways at once: cell renewal, collagen support, pigment regulation, and long-term skin stability. Few ingredients can legitimately claim that breadth of evidence.
