Sleep is not a passive state. It is an active, immune-regulating process that supports inflammatory control, cellular repair, and hormonal balance
Increasing evidence shows that reduced sleep quality or duration can shift the immune system toward a more inflammatory profile.
Over time, this low-grade inflammatory signalling may contribute to the development or progression of autoimmune conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis.
So what is happening biologically when sleep is fragmented ?
When sleep is restricted or fragmented, pro-inflammatory cytokines tend to rise. At the same time, regulatory immune mechanisms – those that help maintain immune tolerance – may become less effective. Circadian disruption further compounds this effect by altering immune cell timing, gene expression, and inflammatory signalling patterns.
Sleep deprivation also activates the HPA axis and sympathetic nervous system, increasing stress hormones that can perpetuate immune dysregulation. The result can be a feed-forward loop:
Poor sleep ;
Increased inflammation
Worsened symptoms
Results in further sleep disruption.
More and more evidence suggests that consistently poor sleep quality or insufficient sleep can push the immune system toward a more inflammatory state.
Over time, that inflammatory load may contribute to the development or progression of chronic inflammatory and autoimmune conditions, including rheumatoid arthritis and multiple sclerosis.
Sleep disruption activating neuroendocrine and autonomic pathways that can amplify inflammation.
The encouraging part is that sleep is modifiable. Consistent sleep–wake timing, morning light exposure, addressing sleep-disordered breathing, and evidence-based insomnia support (CBT-I as first-line for chronic insomnia) can make a meaningful difference to immune resilience and inflammatory control.
