Why Gut Health Matters.

Why Gut Health Matters.

We are becoming increasingly aware of the role our gut plays on our overall health. With so much information out there, it can be overwhelming to know what’s true or false. So how do we improve our gut health? What’s the difference between good bacteria and bad bacteria? Are gut health supplements and cleanses the only way to go?

When it comes to keeping healthy, Edelle O’ Doherty Nutritional Therapist: Functional Medicine Practioner, says a great place to start is prioritising your gut health. Our gut plays an important role when it comes to keeping healthy, so it’s important to understand how to do this without being influenced by what we see on social media.

When we talk about your gut, we mean your gastrointestinal system which includes your stomach, small intestine and colon.

You may not know it, but gut health plays a huge role on both our mental and physical health and can have a significant impact on how we feel day to day.

Why is gut health so important?

Our gut is responsible for putting our body into working order. As it breaks down the foods we eat, our gut absorbs nutrients that support our body’s functions.

Throughout your gut, your body can produce “good” bacteria and help keep “bad” bacteria in check. When you have a healthy balance of bacteria in your gut, you’re more likely to feel and stay healthy.

Edelle O’ Doherty offers comprehensive consultations to allow you understand, why gut health is so important and offers tips on how you can have a healthy gut.

Are you aware of how influential your gut health and microbiome are to your overall health particularly, when it comes to skin health, weight loss, hormone balance, brain fog and many other chronic conditions.

  • Do you understand how hydration  and nutrition can fuel a healthy microbiome?
  • Do you understand how much our gut health benefits from exercise?
  • Do you struggle to manage your lifestyle behaviours like food choices, sleep, exercise? Do you understand how your gut health can impact on these?
  • Do you find it challenging to balance work and life or struggle with stress management?
Do you understand how your gut health can impact on stress but also how stress influences your microbiome and digestive health?

We can support you in optimising your digestive system and microbiome and in gaining balance in your stress responses to ensure that your health gains are life changing and long lasting.

Learn the powers of prevention by taking control of your health.

Nothing replaces a varied whole-food diet, made up of mostly vegetables and fruit. A good way to know if the meal will be good for your gut is by identifying the number of different food colours, ‘eat a rainbow every day’

Many people live with digestive symptoms for years without realising they may point to deeper health issues. Understanding the early signs of poor gut health is essential for identifying and addressing problems before they escalate. While occasional discomfort is normal, persistent symptoms could indicate an imbalance in your digestive system that requires attention.

One of the most common symptoms of poor gut health is bloating, often caused by excess gas or poor digestion. You may also experience irregular bowel movements, including constipation, diarrhoea, or unpredictable patterns that affect your day-to-day comfort. Other physical symptoms include fatigue, especially after meals, and frequent cravings for sugar or processed foods — both of which can be influenced by gut bacteria imbalances.

Surprisingly, your skin can also reflect what’s happening in your gut. Conditions like acne, rosacea and eczema, or unexplained rashes may be linked to inflammation and poor nutrient absorption. Additionally, a struggling gut can impact your immune system, leading to more frequent colds or infections.

How to Fix an Unhealthy Gut

If you’re dealing with persistent digestive symptoms, fatigue, or skin issues, it’s time to take steps to fix an unhealthy gut. Repairing your gut involves a combination of targeted lifestyle changes, specific foods, and sometimes professional guidance to get to the root of the problem.

The foundation of healing starts with diet. Reducing sugar, processed foods, and artificial additives is essential, as these feed bad bacteria and promote inflammation. Instead, focus on high-fibre foods, fermented products, and whole, nutrient-dense meals. Gut health supplements like probiotics and prebiotics can also support the restoration of a healthy microbiome by reintroducing beneficial bacteria and feeding them with the right nutrients

Edelle O’ Doherty offers comprehensive consultations to allow you understand, why gut health is so important and offers tips on how you can have a healthy gut.

Compassionate Inquiry is a somatic-based psychotherapeutic approach that gently uncovers and releases layers of childhood trauma, constriction and suppressed emotion embedded in the body, that can be at the root or contribute to physical and mental illness and addiction. Certain principles are maintained during a Compassionate Inquiry session.

These are:

·

    • The client is encouraged to bring a specific intention to each session.
    • The client determines how much to engage in the session and may request to stop at any time.
    • The therapist may interrupt the client during the session to bring the client into awareness of the present moment and to body sensations and emotions.
    • The therapist follows the subtle cues of the client.
