Protect Your Heart, Brain and Life with Sulforaphane

Wellness and Lifestyle – January 30, 2022

Protect Your Heart, Brain and Life with Sulforaphane

Sulforaphane is a powerful phytochemical that’s created when a cruciferous plant’s myrosinase and glucoraphanin compounds combine, through chewing, chopping, cutting, etc. The resulting sulforaphane tamps down the body’s production of free radicals, helping to block a number of the enzymes that can activate cancer cells. In addition to being full of fiber and rich in sulforaphane, cruciferous veggies are brain and heart-protective and are associated with a reduced risk of colon  and rectal cancer. They’re also credited with helping to protect against prostatic, endometrial and ovarian cancers – so when they’re referred to as superfoods, it’s no joke.

HARD WATER VS. SOFT WATER: HOW YOUR WATER REALLY AFFECTS YOUR HAIR

Wellness and Lifestyle – August 20, 2021

HARD WATER VS. SOFT WATER: HOW YOUR WATER REALLY AFFECTS YOUR HAIR

Wondering about hard vs. soft water for hair? We’ve all heard the terms “hard” and “soft” water before, but if we’re completely honest—we had no idea what it meant until recently. How could a liquid like water feel hard? Does hard water damage hair? What makes water soft and how does that affect your hair? We don’t know about you but, hard water for hair doesn’t sound like a beauty treatment we’d want to try. What is hard water?Contrary to what it sounds like, the name hard water doesn’t have anything to do with the way the water feels. Water is hard when it has a higher than usual concentration of minerals, primarily calcium and magnesium carbonates. Water can become hard naturally as it picks up minerals from rocks as it flows through rivers, streams, and wells. While hard water is generally thought of as safe to drink, cook with, and bathe in, many cities task their water treatment plants with filtering out as many minerals as possible. However, filtered water can sometimes pick up more minerals as it leaves the treatment plant and makes its way to your home through hundreds of miles of metal pipes. In Ireland we mostly have hard water. Interestingly hard water tastes nicer than soft water. Is hard water bad for your hair?Hard water doesn’t just sound like it’s bad for your hair—it can be.All the minerals and heavy metals in hard water can cause your hair to become dry, brittle, brassy, and dull. Your scalp can also get flaky and itchy, too.

Sleep and skin health.

Sleep and skin health.

Good quality, restorative sleep is also crucial for the nightly cellular repair, regeneration and immune function. Every night, we go through repeated cycles of two distinctly different sleep phases: Rapid Eye Movement (REM, when the most active dreaming happens) and non-REM sleep (NREM, the deeper sleep). During NREM, blood flow is directed from our brain and body core, more towards the body’s periphery including the skin. Thus, a restorative hormone flow is established, and cellular repair is enhanced.Sleep deprivation on the other hand is known to contribute to systemic inflammation, even after a short period of only a couple of weeks, as research has shown. In fact, sleep deprivation is thought to increase all sorts of age-related processes as well as chronic health problems.

Should you be taking a collagen supplement?

Wellness and Lifestyle – July 25, 2021

Should you be taking a collagen supplement?

Collagen. It’s one of the essential building blocks of healthy skin and many other parts of the body like our hair, nails, and bones. It gives our skin its structure, strength and elasticity, and that’s what forms the scaffolding of the skin – the supportive base that provides us with the lift we need for a plump, vibrant complexion. Unfortunately, however, optimum levels don’t last, and once we hit 25, production starts to slow down – inducing a loss of elasticity, firmness and luminosity. When collagen breakdown begins, the skin gradually loses that scaffolding, and it starts to look frail and collapses more easily into folds. While we can’t prevent these changes, there are things that we can do to slow them down.

Read about the damaging potential of too much sun exposure.

Wellness and Lifestyle – May 16, 2021

Sun facts!

Sun beds should be banned!! Using a sun bed before the age of 30 increases the risk of melanoma by up to 75% .Sun exposure does help the body produce necessary vitamin D, but be aware that the cumulative impact of unprotected UV exposure over the years damages the integrity of your skin . Numerous studies have linked overexposure to UV light with skin cancer . Look to supplements and natural sources of the vitamin in your diet, such as in cheese and eggs, or a supplement of vitamin D3 will ensure you keep your levels high. Even a few minutes of sun exposure on your forearms walking the dog or walking the kids to school provides the average individual with enough UV exposure to make ample vitamin D.There is no such thing as a healthy tan.

Relaxation advice from Sabina at Serenity Day Spa

The vagus nerve (also known as the 10th cranial nerve or CN X) is a very long nerve that originates in the brain stem and extends down through the neck and into the chest and abdomen. It carries both motor and sensory information, and it supplies innervation to the heart, major blood vessels, airways, lungs, esophagus, stomach, and intestines. While there are actually two vagus nerves (the left and the right), doctors usually refer to them together as “the vagus nerve.”The vagus nerve helps control several muscles of the throat and of the voicebox. It plays a major role in regulating the heart rate and keeping the gastrointestinal tract in working order. The vagus nerves also carry sensory information from the internal organs back to the brain Cold water therapies stimulate the vagus nerve as does singing and gargling .

How to cope with that nameless dread, anxiety and stress.

Experts in the field of breathwork say that as many 80% of us have dysfunctional breathing patterns. We come in to the world knowing how to breath, but as we age we appear to learn to breath shallow and short. People who are anxious tend to breathe in their upper lungs (upper chest) with shallow, rapid breaths, instead of breathing into their lower lungs (lower chest). This is one contribution to hyperventilation: shallow, upper lung breathing.

A new study has shown that people who regularly eat oranges are less likely to develop macular degeneration than people who do not eat oranges.

Wellness and Lifestyle – July 08, 2019

A new study has shown that people who regularly eat oranges are less likely to develop macular degeneration than people who do not eat oranges.

A new study has shown that people who regularly eat oranges are less likely to develop macular degeneration than people who do not eat oranges. Researchers at the Westmead Institute for Medical Research interviewed more than 2,000 Australian adults aged over 50 and followed them over a 15-year period. The research showed that people who ate at least one serving of oranges every day had more than a 60% reduced risk of developing late macular degeneration 15 years later. Lead Researcher Associate Professor Bamini Gopinath from the University of Sydney said the data showed that flavonoids in oranges appear to help prevent against the eye disease. "Essentially we found that people who eat at least one serve of orange every day have a reduced risk of developing macular degeneration compared with people who never eat oranges," she said. "Even eating an orange once a week seems to offer significant benefits. "The data shows that flavonoids found in oranges appear to help protect against the disease." Associate Professor Gopinath said that until now most research has focused on the effects of common nutrients such as vitamins C, E and A on the eyes. "Our research is different because we focused on the relationship between flavonoids and macular degeneration. "Flavonoids are powerful antioxidants found in almost all fruits and vegetables, and they have important anti-inflammatory benefits for the immune system. "We examined common foods that contain flavonoids such as tea, apples, red wine and oranges. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5808339/
