Dry/Dehydrated Skin - Causes and Treatment Options

Skin Care Tips and Guides – November 06, 2023

Dry/Dehydrated Skin - Causes and Treatment Options

When your skin is dehydrated it simply means that it is lacking in moisture. The skin usually produces its own moisture in the form of hyaluronic acid and surface oil (sebum), which the skin will naturally produce. However, there are a number of internal and external factors that can disrupt this process, and the skin requires a little extra care. When the complexion becomes dry, it can lead to a number of other concerns whereby it’s even texture and tone have changed. Dry skin will often lose its natural glow, giving the appearance a dull and lifeless look. The complexion may feel rough, start to become tight, flaky, itchy, red and fine lines can look more noticeable.

Post Summer Skin treats.

That summer glow can look very attractive, skin conditions such as acne, pigmentation, previous skin damage is very often camouflaged by a tan. Unfortunately, despite the sun having lots of health benefits. Long-term effects of ultraviolet radiation exposure or overexposure to the sun can lead to premature ageing and skin cancer. The sun’s UV rays reach the DNA within the cells in your skin and cause them to malfunction. Skin cancer is caused by abnormal growth of the cells nearest the skin, squamous, basal and melanocytes. Squamous and basal cells form non melanoma skin cancer while melanocytes cells which give the skin its pigment or colour form melanoma skin cancer. Basal cell cancers (BCC) are more strongly related to acute sun burn events in childhood and intermittent adult

Did you know skincare products have a shelf life?

Did you know skincare products have a shelf life?

Skincare has a shelf life – the date can usually be found on the back of the bottle or the bottom of the jar. If there's not an actual date, there might be a tiny image of an opened jar with a number on it: six, 12, 24, or 36. This refers to the 'period after opening' and it recommends the maximum number of months a product should be used before discarding. It is important to note as lots of skincare has oils and these oils oxidise.

Acne Prevention Tips

To reduce acne or inflammatory skin conditions, I recommend eliminating soft drinks and processed foods because they are packed with synthetic additives like nitrates, artificial dyes, and flavourings. Such ingredients may stimulate inflammatory processes in the entire body, including the skin. Many people see reductions of acne after they eliminate just dairy and sugary foods. When indulging in a dessert, opt for dark chocolate, fruits or baked goods made from whole grains, like oatmeal cookies.

Treating your neck!

Skin Care Tips and Guides – July 17, 2022

Treating your neck!

Protect the skin on your neck! Use SPF daily . Avoid sunburn and excessive sun exposure.  Moisturise your neck skin and décolletage, drink plenty of water, eat a healthy diet filled with antioxidants and vitamins. Treatments .    Profhilo is an injectable hyaluronic acid treatment for skin laxity on the face, neck, or hands, offering intense hydration and tighter, more luminous skin. Some call it the injectable skin glow! This anti-ageing treatment contains higher concentrations of hyaluronic acid than dermal fillers, with 64mg of HA per injection. Unlike a dermal filler treatment, Profhilo does not give volume, it instead provides a slow release of hyaluronic acid below the skin surface to hydrate and rejuvenate.   This “super skin booster” not only hydrates your skin from the inside out, getting rid of any crepey-ness, it increases your collagen and elastin production like nothing else I know, actually remodelling your skin, making it look far firmer. Profhilo has the following unique abilities: It stimulates your body to produce 4 types of collagen (good collagen, not scar collagen) It enhances stem cell reproduction meaning your skin rejuvenates It restores both skin and fat layers to their natural state (it doesn’t enhance them, so do not worry, you won’t look puffed up!) It can treat the face, neck, lip lines, arms, decolletage, hands and tummies.    SkinCeuticals Tripeptide-R Retinol. A daily retinol cream specifically formulated exclusively for the neck, SkinCeuticals Tripeptide-R Retinol Neck Repair Cream improves the appearance of wrinkles, loss of firmness, uneven skin tone and crepiness.

Dehydrated Skin and how to treat it.

Skin Care Tips and Guides – October 17, 2021

Dehydrated Skin and how to treat it.

Dehydrated skin is a common skin concern. Dehydrated skin occurs when the skin lacks moisture in the surface layer which is the epidermis. For our skin to function optimally, it needs adequate water content and without it, dead skin cells won’t exfoliate smoothly, leaving skin feeling dry and rough. It’s important to know the difference between dry skin and dehydrated skin as the terms are often incorrectly used interchangeably, which makes it difficult to treat. Dry skin is a permanent state and is often referred to as a “skin type”. It results due to the lack of water and lipids - oils skin feels rough and tight, those with dry skin are often dry on other parts of the body.

Moisturisers, What are they?

Skin Care Tips and Guides – August 20, 2021

Moisturisers, What are they?

Moisturiser is simply a generic term that encompasses an extensive array of topical creams, gels, lotions, emulsions, and ointments. These formulas may contain humectants, occlusives or emollients in their combination of ingredients. To choose the best moisturiser for your skin, it’s important to understand the difference between the different ingredients etc. Why It’s Important to Moisturise Your Skin. The difference between emollients, humectants and occlusives really depends on the benefits required. Sun Protection is essential.

Skin Care Tips and Guides – May 30, 2021

Sun Protection is essential.

Most skin cancer is caused by UV exposure. At least 50% of sun damage occurs under the age of ten. Kids under the age of one, should not be exposed to sun light, nor should they have SPF applied to their skin. Kids have thinner, more sensitive skin, making it essential for parents to develop good sun-protection habits from the get-go. Their skin barrier while properly formed at birth is different to that of an adult. As infant skin continues to mature through the first years of life, it is important that skin care products are formulated appropriately.

AT-HOME SPA EVENING .

Nuala Woulfe offers tips on how to replicate a salon-worthy facial in the comfort of your own home.As there is a lot of interest in ‘how to do a skin treatment at home, here we go, these little treats make us not only look great but feel great too. Thankfully, self-isolation can still mean self-indulgence, so here are my tips for a beautiful night in.Firstly, tell the family that you need some guilt-free “me time”, an hour or so away from the bustle of kids, household chores / meal prep etc where you can put yourself first. When possible, start your night-time facial about an hour before you go to bed because it not only prepares you for a good sleep, but it gives you the time to really take care of your skin. Dim the lights and put some soothing music on in the background to create the perfect ambiance to rest and relax.

SPF is by far the most important skin treatment.

Skin Care Tips and Guides – May 16, 2021

SPF is by far the most important skin treatment.

SPF is by far the most important skin treatment. Broad Spectrum SPF,  has an SPF of 30 or higher. , which means the sunscreen protects against UVB and UVA rays and helps prevent skin cancer and sunburn.  Sunlight consists of two types of harmful rays that reach the earth — UVA rays and UVB rays. Overexposure to either can lead to skin cancer. In addition to causing skin cancer, here’s what each of these rays do:UVA rays (or ageing rays) can prematurely age your skin, causing wrinkles and age spots, and can pass through window glass.UVB rays (or burning rays) are the primary cause of sunburn and are blocked by window glass. On the label, you’ll see whether the sunscreen:Is Broad Spectrum, which means the sunscreen protects against UVB and UVA rays and helps prevent skin cancer and sunburn.Has an SPF of 30 or higher. While SPF 15 is the FDA's minimum recommendation for protection against skin cancer and sunburn, the AAD recommends choosing a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30.Has a Skin Cancer/Skin Aging Alert in the Drug Facts section of the label, which means the sunscreen will only prevent sunburn and will not reduce the risk of skin cancer and early skin aging. Is Water Resistant (effective for up to 40 minutes in water) or Very Water Resistant (effective for up to 80 minutes in water). This means the sunscreen provides protection while swimming or sweating up to the time listed on the label.Sunscreen manufacturers are banned from claiming that a sunscreen is "waterproof" or "sweat proof," as the FDA has determined that those terms are misleading.Even when using a water-resistant sunscreen, you should reapply after getting out of the water or sweating. https://www.nualawoulfe.ie/collections/skinceuticals/products/advanced-brightening-uv-defence-spf-50 https://www.nualawoulfe.ie/products/skinceuticals-ultra-facial-defense-spf-50-very-high-protection-30ml?_pos=2&_sid=edcd17f3c&_ss=r

Skincare tips for a defined jawline & firmer neck.

Skin Care Tips and Guides – March 23, 2021

Skincare tips for a defined jawline & firmer neck.

Skincare tips for a defined jawline & firmer neck.  They say you can tell a person’s age by looking at their neck. When you make time to care for your skin with regular treatments and at-home rituals, a crepey neck and jawline is the last thing you want.  There are several factors that cause your jawline and neck to drop or wrinkle. As you age, your skin loses collagen and elastin — two proteins that are responsible for how taught, firm and supple your skin is. Not only is the skin on your neck thinner, it’s also a highly mobile body part that continually bends and twists with the motion of our head. This makes it far more susceptible to wrinkles over time!Genetics have a part to play in how the skin on your neck and jaw develop as you age. This is why it’s important to take action early if you suspect you’re genetically prone to looser skin in this area. Daily activities are also a contributing factor, the most common being looking down at a smartphone or laptop screen (it’s called ‘tech neck’!). Sun damage is another factor, over many years of exposure the skin becomes damaged. This takes time to show visibly on the surface.  It’s common for the neck and full jawline area to be neglected during a daily skincare ritual. Many of us are so focused on facial problem areas that we forget to bring product further down onto the neck area! After all — it’s not just your face that needs TLC. Your neck and jawline can also benefit from cleansing, toning,  moisturising and protection. Combine with in clinic treatments like Radiofrequency for enhanced benefits.  At-home treatments for a firm neck and defined jawline. Whether you’re looking for a dedicated product to bring into your existing at-home skincare ritual or want something to maintain the results of a treatment, you can find a solution in this neck cream recently launched by SkinCeuticals. SkinCeuticals Tripeptide-R Neck Repair . SkinCeuticals Tripeptide-R Neck Repair is an award-winning 0.2% retinol cream that has been specially formulated for the neck area. It uses Tripeptide Concentrate to fortify and firm the skin, while Glaucine Complex reduces collagen denaturing, so you keep more of your natural firmness for longer. How to use. This neck firming cream has a strong formulation, so should only be used once a week for the first week. You can increase this to twice daily once you’ve built up a retinol tolerance. Massage two pumps of product in upward movements towards the jawline for the best effects. Avoid mixing with other retinol or glycolic products in the same area. You can use retinol/ glycolic on your face and use SkinCeuticals Tripeptide-R Neck Repair on your neck and chest area.     Shop now https://www.nualawoulfe.ie/collections/skinceuticals/products/skinceuticals-tripeptide-r-neck-repair

ANTI-AGEING BEAUTY ROUTINE WITH VITAMIN C FOR OILY SKIN

Skin Care Tips and Guides – March 16, 2021

ANTI-AGEING BEAUTY ROUTINE WITH VITAMIN C FOR OILY SKIN

Oily skin isn't just for teens. Adults too can be prone to shiny skin, large pores and blemishes. And they do not pass through aging skin and its annoyances either (sagging skin, wrinkles, loss of radiance, etc.). This is why we have concocted a special anti-ageing beauty routine for oily skin including vitamin C and anti-blemish and anti-excess sebum active ingredients for skin on top!Vitamin C beauty routine for oily skin. CLEANSE YOUR SKIN WITH A SUITABLE CLEANSER Cleansing the skin is an essential step in a skin routine worthy of the name. And it is all the more important when the skin is oily, because it is necessary to eliminate the surplus of sebum in addition to the impurities, pollution and possibly makeup. Be careful,  not to be overly zealous - we  say cleaning not  stripping (even if that is tempting). Respect your skin's microbiota with a gentle cleanser that reduces excess sebum and acts on the skin texture. For this,  Blemish + Age Cleanser SkinCeuticals is the ideal product. It is a cleansing gel that removes impurities and gently exfoliates the skin with salicylic acid. Perfect for decongesting pores and reducing excess sebum without attacking the skin. Then apply special their  anti-imperfection solution Blemish + Age Toner , which perfects the cleansing by eliminating stubborn impurities and improves skin texture.     ADOPT AN ANTIOXIDANT SERUM TO PREVENT SIGNS OF AGEING. The serum vitamin C is a must for all those and all those who want to counter the effects of aging on their short and medium term skin while boosting its radiance. And because oily skin is not exempt from aging, it needs an antioxidant serum specially dedicated to its skin type. This is why SkinCeuticals recently created the Silymarin CF serum, which contains 15% L-ascorbic acid, 0.5% silymarin, 0.5% ferulic acid and 0.5% salicylic acid. In addition to preventing the formation of free radicals thanks to vitamin C, it acts against oxidation and excess sebum, refines the skin texture and reduces the appearance of wrinkles. A serum with magical powers that oily skin adopts without hesitation! MOISTURISE YOUR SKIN WITH A MATTIFYING CREAM.   Opt for the Daily Moisture cream . This moisturiser has the advantage of having a broad action: it repairs and promotes healing of the epidermis while nourishing and moisturising the skin with just enough not to overload it. It also reduces the appearance of pores and leaves the skin supple and smooth without a shiny effect. PROTECT YOUR SKIN WITH A SUN FILTER. If the sun has “positive” effects on the appearance of oily skin, in depth, it does a lot of damage to the skin unfortunately.. So to enjoy the benefits of the sun without damage to your skin,  apply daily photoprotection. Turn to Mineral Matte UV Defence SPF30 , a 100% mineral face sunscreen that offers broad spectrum UVA and UVB shielding. What we like about this sunscreen is that it's non-greasy and offers a matte finish even if it's hot and humid.       Once or twice a week, perform a purifying clay mask with our Clarifying Clay Mask . This mask acts both on dilated pores, excess sebum and visible signs of skin ageing. The skin is clearer, the skin texture is smoother and the complexion more radiant.
