Collagen

Collagen

Collagen, a protein naturally produced in the body, is also a popular supplement and beauty product ingredient that claims to improve the health of your skin.

The marketing for collagen products claims they can improve skin elasticity, reduce visible wrinkles, and increase blood flow to the skin.

Collagen is a protein that serves as one of the main building blocks for your bones, skin, hair, muscles, tendons, and ligaments.

Collagen keeps our skin youthful. Collagen is what keeps our skin from sagging, giving us that plump, youthful look.

Your body naturally makes collagen, but this production decreases with age.

Starting in our mid-20s, we slowly begin to lose collagen. For women, we can lose up to 30% of our collagen production in the first 5 years of menopause.

Because we lose collagen as we age, many are using collagen supplements as part of an anti-ageing beauty regimen.

Do collagen supplements work?

Collagen is often sold as a supplement, like collagen peptide powders, capsules, or liquid. The issue is that most things we ingest are broken down by stomach acids and are not absorbed into the bloodstream. It is unclear if we absorb ingested collagen or if it is totally broken down in the stomach. Marine Collagen peptides are the best source, and the peptides encourage your body to produce collagen.

What about collagen creams?

Collagen creams do not work as a collagen molecule is too big so will not absorb. Topical treatments like retinol and tretinoin are scientifically proven to promote collagen formation. Additionally, antioxidants such as vitamin C can reverse the inflammation that causes damage to the collagen in your skin.

Protecting your natural collagen for healthy skin

Ultraviolet light from the sun breaks down collagen, so it is important to wear sunscreen daily.

Eating foods high in antioxidants, like fruits and vegetables, can also prevent collagen breakdown.

Collagen Peptides Reverse Skin Ageing from the Inside – the best source is Marine based.

Oral intake of clinically effective doses of collagen peptides and hyaluronic acid restores skin hydration and elasticity, reducing eye wrinkle depth up to 20%.

Skinade

Skinade is a skincare vitamin drink which delivers essential micronutrients in liquid form and aims to re-build the collagen matrix in your skin. Skinade aims to combat the signs of ageing by reducing oxidative stress, preventing cross linking of collagen fibres, increasing moisture and hydration, increasing natural hyaluronic acid production within the dermal layer of the skin. As a result, Skinade aims to restore your skin's youthful appearance, improve tone, texture, hydration, smooth furrow lines and promote better skin suppleness.

Chicken Broth

Chicken broth is excellent for healing – great for gut health, helps boost collagen levels.

Enjoy this chicken bone broth – alone as a snack or drink or incorporated into other recipes – not only for its taste but also for its skin-enhancing benefits, starting with collagen, crucial for reducing fine lines and wrinkles.

Cook Time

Organic Chicken Broth Servings: 4

Equipment

Large roasting pan

Large soup pot or slow cooker

Ingredients

2 lbs organic chicken bones.

5 quarts filtered water

6 carrots cut into large chunks

1 medium yellow onion quartered

1 cup shiitake mushrooms

2 tbsp apple cider vinegar

1 inch piece fresh ginger skin on, halved

1 tsp Himalayan salt or Celtic Sea salt or more to taste

1/2 bunch fresh Italian parsley chopped

7 sprigs fresh thyme

6 sprigs fresh rosemary

5 cloves garlic peeled and crushed or diced

Instructions

Preheat the oven to 350° (180°C, or gas mark 4). In a large roasting pan, roast the bones for 30 minutes. (You can skip this step, but it adds a good flavour to the broth.) Transfer to a large (6-quart/5.7 L) soup pot or slow cooker.

Add the water, carrots, celery, onion, mushrooms, cider vinegar, ginger, and salt. Bring to boil: reduce the heat to a very low simmer and cover. Cook for 24 to 48 hours. Skim off any foam that forms on top during the first hour of cooking. The longer you simmer the broth, the more bone marrow nutrients will seep into it.

During the last hour of cooking, stir in the parsley, thyme, rosemary, and garlic. Strain, and enjoy war, or add to one of the recipes as indicated.

Notes

VARIATIONS Instead of Chicken bones you can use beef grass fed bones (simmer for 12 to 224 hours) or fish bones (simmer for 8 hours). You can use only vegetables if you are vegan or vegetarian; you will not obtain the bone marrow benefits, but you will still obtain nutrients from the vegetables. Skip the bone and add more celery, carrots, broccoli, and other vegetables, such as greens (kale, collard greens, chard), and simmer until the vegetables are tender.
